Contemporary woman portrait exhibition

An exhibition of women portrait by the young artist Lam Shiu Chi opened in Hong-Kong on December 18. The exposition was rather big: 60 portraits painted by the artist during various years of her work are present there. The artist works in many genres and her repertoire has some landscapes and still-lives but the portrait is her favorite genre. It is the genre she totally reveals herself as an original author with unrepeatable style.
Woman’s beauty is internal topic. How evanescent the human beauty should be the painting is able to make it eternal. Now we can contemplate the women images of the various epochs and many faces have entered the world history of painting. While the art exist the women images will exist too. The years passed, so did the styles and tastes and women faces changed on the paintings too. However, the woman‘s portrait has been a symbol of tenderness, sweetness and enigma in all times not depending on the fashion. These are the qualities that in the opinion of many and the painter herself are the characteristic for the woman.
The famous women of our epoch as well as strangers are shown on the portraits by Lam Shiu Chi. The artist didn’t want to create the "Hall of Glory", on the contrary, she has been interested in uncommon and mysterious faces, not the ones easy to recognize. Even the portraits depicting celebrities show them from the unusual angle. The artist achieves not only the portrait similarity but also the exact image, character or mood rendering of the depicted model. The paintings by Lam Shiu Chi are painted in tender light paints and are very decorative. The artist uses many additional elements: the flowers, birds, thin tree wigs and flying by the winds petals neighbor on the women figures on the portraits.
Time: December 18-30, 2010 Place: Hong-Kong, Wan Fung Art Gallery

new collection from acclaimed Spanish designer Jaime Hayon for Lladró

The new collection from acclaimed Spanish designer Jaime Hayon for Lladró is an exciting and welcome release.
Whilst in keeping with Lladró’s signature delicacy, a touch of humour and cute has been added. The combination is a winning formula, which looks set to be hugely popular.
The Fantasy Collection consists of 01: Lover’s Garden, Scene 02: Raining Hearts and Toy.
The new Lladro collection adds a dreamlike element to Lladró’s signature delicacy, capturing special moments from magical worlds. Each individual piece reveals a surreal and fantastic scene, from heady, romantic love through to child like play.
image
Lover’s Garden - £1,700. This Limited Edition piece is, for me, simply delightful. The character and hearts are reminiscent of Doug Hyde’s Smile collection. This is a big box ticked as far as I am concerned.
The character of The Lover plucks a heart from his garden, which instantly turns to the brightest red from Lladró’s colour palette as a symbol of passionate love. The scene is captured in a glass dome and appears as if frozen in time.
image
Raining Hearts - £765. This shows an intimate group of toys enclosed within a glass dome, with each monochrome element featuring beautifully hand painted hearts.
Jaime Hayon’s toy theme has been a signature element of his work over the years and has been incorporated within his collection for Lladró and can be seen within this piece.  This is also a limited edition piece.
image
Toy - £135. Toy is Jaime Hayon’s signature toy that pops up throughout The Fantasy Collection. This piece has been transformed into an originally functional piece as a decorative chopstick rest.
This New Lladro edition has a guilt free sentiment that I like very much.

The art exhibition Connecting Weave, Threads, and Culture dedicated to the ecology

The art exhibition Connecting Weave, Threads, and Culture dedicated to the ecology friendly art opens on December 17 in Australia. The exhibition is organized by the local company Ngarrindjeri Eco Art Co-Op (NEAC) that has organized the promotion companies of similar art for some years. All the works shown at the exhibition were created using eco materials or eco technologies in one way or another. A considerable part of the works is worked in traditional style. It is not surprising though the traditional art is closely connected with the ecology issues. Nevertheless, the exhibition isn´t limited by such exhibits only. The authors using contemporary technologies in their works are welcomed here. For example, 65 works of art represented at the exhibition are made of the secondary raw materials. However such unusual and ineffectual material was converted into real masterpieces in the hands of the artists. The exhibition’s display turned out to be very miscellaneous –here one can find literally everything from collages to purely designer projects. Weaved pictures and textile painting are of particular interest. It is worth mentioning that the textile works became the principal part of the exhibition; however painting, graphic art, ceramics, glass sculpture and many others will be represented at the exhibition.
The exhibition was dedicated to the Christmas holidays and all exhibits present there can be purchased. At this the exhibition will have a charity character and all the profits obtained from the sales will be spent on various ecological programs.
Workshops for children and adults will be carried out during the exhibitions and the visitors will have an opportunity to speak to the authors of the works being shown.
Time: December 17-19, 2010 Place: Meningie, Australia.

How to invest in art. Important tips

Here are some tips to keep in mind if you're interested in making art part of your portfolio.

Am I interested in art?

This may seem like a basic question, but too often novices enter the art market without a passion for the medium. The result is that they make poor choices and end up with pieces they don't even like.

Am I knowledgeable about art?

If you took an art history course in college, then good for you. But don't think that your knowledge begins and ends there. The art world is like any other market, it lives on what's happening today and it hunts for what will happen tomorrow.

One way to find out what kind of art lover you are is by visiting galleries and art museums. Museums will give you an indication of the field; galleries will tell you what's going on in the world of art right now.

Think of galleries and shows as the marketplace; you must attend them to know what's going on. As a bonus, gallery staff can usually answer a lot of your questions -- but keep in mind, they are salespeople.

Am I a first-time buyer?

When it comes to art, or any money investment for that matter, it's easy to think that you know what you're doing. After all, you see the success of some and you think, why not me? Art, like property, has a lot to do with business, but even more to do with the buyer's taste.

Experience plays an important role in this investment process. While a first time buyer isn't likely to understand how and why the market swings on taste, he isn't necessarily at a disadvantage.

Perhaps the best way to insure your investment is by purchasing something you like. Art prices rise and fall, so if you buy something that you like, you'll be able to live with it through the lean years.

how to inform yourself

Read magazines & newspapers
The art world has its own publications. Start by reading your newspaper's art section for general background. When you visit a gallery you like, pick up any magazines they offer, or ask if the work has been reviewed in any periodicals. A periodical, like ARTnews , will help you better understand the trends in the art market. The Arts section of the Sunday edition of The New York Times is another good place for a novice to start, as are The Village Voice and LA Weekly , which both have regular art reviews.

Find a trusted advisor
There are a number of people who make their living helping you buy the right piece. If you decide to use an advisor (I say if , because advisors are typically available only to those who wish to invest several hundred thousand dollars), make sure you go with someone who can provide strong references. After all, hiring an art advisor is like hiring any other professional -- his reputation for success and honesty is everything.

Do your homework on them. Such people aren't found in the phone book. Often, art advisors find their clients through personal contacts. By attending shows and talking to people, you'll find the art advisors in your area. In other words, this is a word of mouth occupation.

what type of art?

For anyone who has ever seen modern art, you know that even the word "art" can pose a tricky definition. Most collectors focus on an area that they know and love. For example, you might really like abstract sculpture or oil paintings.

Sadly, from an investment perspective, there is no way to gauge the market success of one medium or style. Likewise, especially old art has neither an advantage nor disadvantage over new art.

In other words, it all comes down to taste. The best advice is to focus on the type of art that you like.

is art a good investment?

Yes and no. The truth is that you can make money in art, but you can't always count on it. That's true of stocks too, but if you're a numbers guy who wants tons of stats, art probably isn't for you.

Just remember; the hottest thing can be considered valuable one day and junk the next. But whereas the stock market will point you to a series of logical business failures to explain that result, all the art world can say is that tastes change.
How do they decide how much art will cost?
Most collectors will tell you that pricing art has more to do with the artist than the piece, at least when it comes to setting the initial price point. But then the question becomes whether the piece is typical of the artist's work. Both questions are a matter of taste.

Fortunately, when it comes to finding a hot artist, you can look to the market trend. If you go to art shows and auctions, and you begin to hear one name more and more often, it's likely that that artist is trending up. Finding the right piece, knowing when to buy and when to sell, are all things that the seasoned investor learns over time.

So when should you sell?

While there is no set time to sell, art is not a field in which investors make money with quick trades. Art can appreciate over years or even decades. In short, there are no good rules on when to sell.

ROI
It's difficult to project the average historical return on art investments because, unlike stocks, the market doesn't always report results. That said, some investors believe that over the last 50 years, art has out performed the S&P 500. Many investors project returns on investment in excess of 15%.

Famous, or up and comer?
It's art, but the obvious investment rule, "buy low and sell high," still applies. The truth is that you can make a buck with a famous artist or an unknown just as easily as you can lose your shirt. However, it's much more difficult to spot a rising star, especially if you're just starting out.

So in the beginning you should stick to known quantities as much as possible. But remember; even a famous artist can turn into a disaster. A popular artist, Mark Kostabi, was well on his way to prominence -- Sylvester Stallone was among his many patrons -- when an errant comment (about AIDS benefitting the art world because it killed many gay artists) led to a market collapse for his pieces. His work went from being valued in the low five figures to virtually worthless overnight.

What the art world thinks of the artist
There are many steps on the road to success for an artist. Along the way, an up and coming artist will probably sign with an agent, have shows in more and more exclusive galleries, get good reviews from critics, and (hopefully) sell a few pieces.
These are all earmarks of a solid investment, but they aren't a guarantee.
What all these factors have in common is that they represent opinions of people in the art world. That's important because these opinions drive the market price. But that doesn't mean that you shouldn't buy a piece from an artist without an agent, or from one who has received bad reviews.
Essentially, what the art world thinks of an artist is a good way to minimize risk. On the other hand, the diminished risk usually means higher prices because other people are in on the artist. By contrast, an unknown artist can have a remarkable return on investment, or no return at all. So, in the end, it's your decision.

Good gift ideas

It can always be a problem getting good gift ideas for loved ones, and often even harder buying gifts for un-loved ones (like when you get the guy no one likes in the secret Santa). To make this arduous process simpler here is a comprehensive guide to getting gift ideas for all occasions.

Good Gift ideas for Romantic Occasions Like Valentines or Anniversaries

Firstly, think back to a seminal moment in your relationship to this person, like your first kiss, the first time you made love, when you proposed, maybe. Think hard about where you were, what you were doing in this place, and try to anchor your gift in this moment. For example, if your first date was at the cinema, why not try to track down a copy of the film you went to see? Romantic gifts are all about sentimentality, so objects reminiscent of the pass are always a good idea.
If you want to splash a bit of cash don’t be afraid to, but don’t just think that the more expensive the better. If you want to buy jewellery or clothes for a woman, or equally for a man, NEVER assume you know what they like! Seek the advice of at least one of their closest friends of the same gender, as there is nothing so bad as buying your girlfriend a pea green smock and watching her pretend to like it. Final piece of advice, show them you know them. It doesn’t matter if the gift doesn’t fit traditional ideas of romance – if your partner loves board games, get them some – if they like motorcycles, then them some new leathers. Finally final advice on this one – always wrap a romantic gift – the little extra effort goes a long way to showing you care.

Good Birthday Gift Ideas

Birthdays can be a tough one – if it’s your partner then the guidelines above work pretty well. For everyone else the important thing to remember is that everyone else they know is getting them a gift too, so try to make sure you don’t go for the most obvious thing. Be original and think laterally – gifts don’t have to be a one off – something like a magazine subscription or a subscription to a website you think they might like are just a couple of suggestions for gifts that repeat throughout the year. Another good tip for birthday gift ideas if you’re really stuck is simply ASK. Unlike romantic gifts there is little premium put on surprise – as a general rule it is better to receive a good gift you expect than an ill judged one you didn’t, especially on an occasion like a birthday when it’s supposed to be ‘all about you’.

Good Christmas Gift Ideas

Christmas may be the hardest occasion of them all – gifts for everyone you care about all at once. First piece of guidance – break down your list. Pick your priority recipients – best friends, immediate family etc and concentrate on them first. Sit down well in advance and apply exactly the same guidance as above to each person and you should be okay. For everyone else think broad appeal. There is no way you have the time and energy to find the perfect gift for everyone you know – some obvious suggestions are food items like chocolate and shopping vouchers for places you know they like – avoid books and films unless you are sure they like them (Most people like film and books but not everyone likes the same kind of thing).

Top Tip

Whatever gifts you decide to buy always keep in mind that, however corny it sounds, it’s the thought that counts. So long as you make it clear you care and that you tried, that is what matters most.

Art Festival in Tempe

The art festival of Tempe that opens on December, 3, is considered one of the biggest in the USA; it is visited by 250 thousand people annually. The authors taking part in the festival will represent painting, graphic works, sculpture, ceramics, wood and glass craft, photography and handmade work there.
The art festival in Tempe is not like the international art exhibition fairs. World-famous stars and renowned experts are not invited there. On the contrary, the festival has unofficial character and doesn’t set global targets to explore contemporary art, understand the tendencies and fashion shaping. The festival is opened for everyone and will make a pleasant pastime for the art lovers and for the ones who would like to purchase a good painting, sculpture or genuine handmade item. Thou the festival covers many art genres it is not easy to become a participant of the event because only the best and genuine authors are chosen by a special jury. 400 artists were chosen to take part in the festival this year. Altogether the festival has two different sets of jury. The second set works during the festival and chooses the best authors in each genre of art. The exposition is divided into 18 sections among which the best author is being chosen in each of them. Beside this, the second jury chooses the best festival participant too.
Other events will take place in the frames of the festival beside the exhibition part. The troops of the street theatres and music bands will put on their performances. Numerous workshops for the adults as well as for the children are planned to be carried out during the days of the festival.
Time: December, 3-5, 2010 Place: Mill Avenue, Tempe, USA.

Exhibition by graphic painter Lenore Simon in the USA

An art exhibition by painter and graphic painter Lenore Simon called "Simply Simon" opens on December, 1 in San Diego. During almost 60 years of artistic career the painter created uncountable number of pieces of art, worked out her own unrepeatable graphical styleand was awarded with a great number of prizes(20 graphic awards among them). In spite of her venerable age Lenore Simon still leads a stirring artistic life participating in the exhibitions not only in the US but as well in the other countries. Of course, it is impossible to cover the whole artwork of the painter in the frames of a single exhibition. But nevertheless the organization Art & Framing Solutions that initiated the present exhibition tried to gather in several halls the works that can help to monitor the development of the art by Lenore Simon. The exposition "Simple Simon" was constituted by the graphic papers drawn in the middle of the past century and the works drawn the last years. In such a way the visitors will be able to see the starting points of the artistic way of the painter and see the graphic works drawn by Simon as a mature author.
Her first works she printed on the printing press manually, now she creates her graphical works with the help of the computer technologies. With that her manual work still remains: each graphic work is additionally retouched by hand. The graphic by Lenore Simon is stylistically varied: from tender lines barely drawn to fully painted angular drawings, from bright color palette to monochrome solutions. It is possible to meet Lenore Simon in personon December, 4 –this day a meeting of collectors with fans in informal conditions will take place.
Time: December 1-31, 2010 Place: Art & Framing Solutions, San Diego, USA.
